Reinterpreting the Architectural Symbolism
The International Community School of Baghdad stands as a modern reinterpretation of Baghdad’s architectural heritage. Here, the traditional concept of the “wall” evolves into a multifunctional structure symbolizing security and openness. Rather than a barrier, the wall becomes a porous membrane adorned with blue metal structures housing vibrant arts, sciences, and public engagement programs.
Integration with Urban Fabric
Pixelated facades allow the school to blend seamlessly with Zayouna’s urban fabric while maintaining its distinct design language. At its heart lies a central courtyard, reminiscent of Islamic courtyards, serving as a communal gathering space. This integration extends to the rooftops, reflecting Islamic architecture’s tradition where rooftops fostered both utility and social interaction.
Balancing Security and Openness
In addressing Baghdad’s security requirements, the challenge was to incorporate a security wall without compromising the school’s openness. Thickened walls and strategically placed windows fulfilled security mandates while preserving the school’s aesthetic integrity. Upon completion, the innovative security measures will blend seamlessly with the architecture, embodying inclusivity and protection.
Prudent Construction Techniques
Despite budget constraints, prudent material choices were made without sacrificing quality or aesthetics. Stucco and pink terrazzo cladding were chosen for their affordability, durability, and local availability. Clear color coding aids navigation, with blue representing cultural and sports functions, pink denoting service areas, and white reserved for educational spaces.
Ingenious Spatial Configuration
The school’s spatial configuration fosters movement and interconnectedness through three distinct circulation systems. The architectural promenade, secondary circulation loop, and tertiary circulation network facilitate efficient movement while encouraging exploration and discovery within the school grounds. This dynamic environment ensures a cohesive educational experience across disciplines.
