Jiannan Wu, originally from China and currently based in New York, specializes in sculpture. He obtained his BFA in Sculpture from the China Academy of Art and further pursued his MFA in Sculpture at the New York Academy of Art. Wu’s artistic vision revolves around wall-mounted reliefs, through which he explores various social phenomena, ranging from politics to sports, to delve into the complexities of contemporary urban life.
Realism and Satirical Narratives
Wu’s creations are characterized by their commitment to realism and their incorporation of playful, satirical narratives. By weaving multifaceted stories, he exposes the often absurd nature of the environments we inhabit today. Each relief, meticulously crafted with compressed spatial volume and employing atmospheric, one-point, and two-point perspective techniques, presents a self-contained scene rich in detail.
Freeze Frames of Contemporary Life
In Wu’s artworks, moments in time are frozen, capturing subjects at specific junctures. These freeze frames serve as snapshots of contemporary existence, encapsulating the essence of various events. Yet, beyond the surface narrative, Wu infuses his pieces with dual layers of meaning, inviting viewers to contemplate not only the depicted event but also the intrinsic nature of the image itself.
