Meta to Shut Down Facebook Gaming App
Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced its decision to discontinue its standalone Facebook Gaming app on both Android and iOS platforms, effective October 28. The app will no longer be accessible for download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Reason for Closure
Meta has not provided specific details regarding the rationale behind shutting down the standalone gaming app. However, the company emphasized that despite this move, its commitment to connecting players, fans, and creators with their favorite games remains unchanged. Users can still access games, streamers, and gaming groups within the Facebook app itself.
Appreciation for Community Contribution
In a notice posted on its website, Meta expressed gratitude to the community for their contributions in building a vibrant gaming community since the launch of the app in April 2020. The company acknowledged the efforts of users in fostering a thriving ecosystem for gamers and fans.
Challenges Faced by the App
The standalone Facebook Gaming app encountered challenges during its launch, particularly with Apple’s App Store policies. Apple rejected the app multiple times, citing rules that prohibit the distribution of casual games through standalone apps. Consequently, Facebook was compelled to remove gameplay functionality from the app to comply with Apple’s guidelines.
Continued Support for Gaming Communities
Despite the discontinuation of the standalone app, Meta affirmed its commitment to supporting gaming communities, developers, and creators on the main Facebook app. Additionally, Facebook Gaming has introduced a new feature called ‘Clips to Reels,’ enabling creators to convert live gameplay clips into Reels, enhancing the gaming experience for users on the platform.
